CONSERVATION/STEWARDSHIP

June 7, Sat. – Church Creek Trail.  Backcountry trail maintenance at Olympic National Forest for National Trails Day on the Church Creek Trail, Trail #871. This is a beautiful trail that needs attention before it reverts to forestland. Work will include trail clearing, removing fallen trees, brushing and some tread repair to areas damaged by erosion. This trail provides an interesting diversity of terrain including an old-growth forest with huge trees, a surprise overlook of an interesting gorge, waterfalls, lakes and who knows what else. The Olympia Branch adopted the trail in 2005 and began a multi-year project to help restore this beautiful, short connector trail. The trail connects the Skokomish and the Wynochee watersheds, so it involves climbing to the drainage divide (1400’ elevation gain). Backcountry trail maintenance requires your 10 essentials, water, lunch, work boots (hiking boots are great) and work gloves (leather or other durable material). The Branch can supply several hand tools for brushing and tread repair. To help, you can bring your tools for working in and on the trail surface. Meet at Mud Bay P&R off State Route 101 at 7:45 a.m. Carpool to Church Creek. Return around 5:30 p.m.  Contact: Jim French, 360-754-6551 or E-mail: jimfrenchwa@comcast.net.

SEAKAYAKING

Chair                                        Henry Romer                360-357-7638

Basic Course                            Will Greenough 360-785-4166

Committee meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month. This is where all the brainstorming and planning takes place. The Committee plans the annual basic kayak course, trips, special events, training and other fun activities. We welcome your enthusiasm.

The next meeting will be June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Alpine Experience. Call Henry Romer, 360-357-7638, or check the Olympia Sea Kayaking community section of the Club webpage, www.mountaineers.org, for details about the Committee.

Olympia Sea Kayaking on the Web

To improve communications among paddlers, we’ve developed an Olympia Sea Kayaking section in the Communities area of the main Mountaineers website, www.mountaineers.org. Here you’ll find meeting minutes, trip reports, photos, and much more. You’re going to like it. If you need help getting in, call Tim Nagle, 360-561-5504 or Ron Jones, 360-359-3395.

Sea Kayak Equivalency

Mountaineer members with previous kayak training and experience, but who have not completed a Mountaineers Sea Kayaking Course (offered in Olympia, Tacoma and Seattle), are encouraged to apply. Olympia Branch members should contact Steve Gorton, 360-866-2788 for an application. The process may take 3 – 6 weeks.

Sea Kayak Trips

Trips are open to all Mountaineers who have graduated from the basic course or been granted equivalency. Trips are classified by the Sea Kayak (SK) rating system. Check with the trip leader to see if the trip is right for you. Some trips are scheduled too late to make it into the Go Guide, so also check the Mountaineer’s website (www.mountaineers.org). If there is a particular trip you would like to see offered, contact Tim Nagle, 360-561-5504 or E-mail: tnagle@stmartin.edu.

May 31, Sat. – Boston Harbor Convergence Zone  (SK II+) ~ 8 nm. At any given time of the day or night, water from numerous inlets and bays to the north, south, and west try to simultaneously funnel through this five-way intersection. For this reason, it is a very dynamic and beautiful place. We’ll launch from Boston Harbor and let the weather dictate where we go. If it’s a nice day, we’ll head for the south end of Squaxin and then Hope Is. before returning. If weather is lousy, we can explore the nooks and crannies along Budd Inlet. This paddle is really designed for 2008 Sea Kayak class students, but anyone is welcome. Sign up with Ron Jones (before 9:00 p.m.), 360-359-3395.

June 7, Sat. – So. Puget Sound Currents  (SK II+) ~ 5 nm. Chart: NOAA 18457. An experience paddle to introduce 2008 Sea Kayak class students to the currents in South Puget Sound. Practice your paddle skills in moving water, judge your drift on the current and ferrying across currents. Plan lunch at Hope Island. Bad weather will alter or cancel trip. Sign up with Steve Wondzell (before 9:00 p.m.). 360-943-7519.

June 15, Sun. – Budd Inlet  (SK II) 7 nm. Chart: NOAA 18448. We’ll launch at 9:00 a.m. from Boston Harbor and float with the flood up the shoreline to lunch, then return. This is a basic class experience trip. Contact Dan Halsey, 360-438-9212.

June 21, Sat. – Rescues and Towing  (SK III) 5 nm. Need more tools for your toolbox when stuff happens? There are at least a dozen alternatives to the standard T-rescue. Each one has an application. There are almost as many ways to tow a disabled or tired paddler home. Spend a wet, vigorous day doing things you may not have done before. Good immersion protection required. Limited to 6 students. Henry Romer, 360-357-7638.

June 21, Sat. – Anderson Island  (SK II+) 14-15 nm. Anderson Island paddle with lunch stop on Eagle Island. We’ll meet at Luhr Beach about 9:00 a.m. and plan on paddling by 9:30 a.m. or so. If winds are high for the day, plan on paddling up towards Ketron Island. Call Horst Nolle for more info., 360-491-0705 or cell at 360-701-9463.

June 27, and July 25, Fri. – Friday Surf Play  “Let’s go surfin now, everybody’s learn how....”  Take a couple hours off on Friday afternoon and lets go to the coast for 2-3 hours of thrashing about in waves. Please bring your enthusiasm and/or prior experience, as well as all appropriate safety gear. Leader’s approval required. Bob Burreson, 360-705-2055.

June 28, Sat. – Nisqually Delta  (SK II-III) 6-8 nm. Chart: NOAA 19448 or Sea Trails WA 204. Leisurely paddle from Luhr Beach to explore Nisqually Delta. Good wildlife viewing. This is a basic class experience paddle. Karen Hook, 360-413-0644 or E-mail: khquilts@comcast.net.

May 21 to Sept. 3 – Wednesday Evening Paddles  (SK II) < 8 nm. Come out after work on Wednesdays and get a little on-the-water socializing, therapy and exercise. These trips are open to all Kayak Course graduates and equivalents. They are not structured to be considered as “experience paddles” for course graduation. No need to sign up – just bring your required gear and be ready to launch at 6: 00 p.m. from the boat ramp at Boston Harbor. Actual destination will be selected by group consensus under leader direction/discretion. If you want more information, please contact Bob Burreson, 360-705-2055. Otherwise, just show up.

May 2, May 30, June 27 and July 25, Fridays – Surf Play at the Coast  “Let’s go surfin now, everybody’s learnin how...” Take a couple hours off on Friday afternoon and let’s go to the coast for 2-3 hours of thrashing about in waves.
