The Olympia Mountaineers

The Ten Essential Systems

  1. Navigation (map and compass)
  2. Sun protection
  3. Insulation (extra clothing)
  4. Illumination (flashlight/headlamp)
  5. First-aid supplies
  6. Fire
  7. Repair kit and tools
  8. Nutrition (extra food)
  9. Hydration (extra water)
  10. Emergency shelter

Every hiker, whether alone or in a party, must carry these items on an individual basis. This is so that if a member of the party is separated, lost, injured, trapped, blinded in whiteout conditions, or going for help, no-one will be without their own survival equipment. There is no excuse for not having all of them, in good condition, on your person at all times while in the woods.
